“In every success story, you will find someone who has made a courageous decision.”
I often dreamed of owning my own business and eventually in 2006 it was possible to do just that along with my wife Lucy. We gave up our secure jobs and took the plunge.
We purchased a run down old pub in the beautiful market town of Kirkby Lonsdale in the Lune Valley, and over eleven years transformed it into a thriving and award winning five star inn.
After the successful sale of the inn in 2017, I have written a book about our journey, the ups and downs, dramas and joys whilst we turned a run down old pub into a thriving and award winning 5-star hospitality business.
The book is available to buy on Amazon as well as in shops locally in and around Kirkby Lonsdale. It is both a humorous and interesting memoir of our journey as well as an aid to those other brave souls thinking of setting out on a similar adventure.
I now offer talks about our experience, along with business coaching and one to one mentoring for business leaders.
Mark has a wealth of experience to share and enthusiasm to match. From a room of 25 people to a venue of over 250 people, or an intimate chat, Mark can take you on a journey that will strike a chord about belief, courage, business and hospitality.
Mark has a detailed understanding of the hospitality business and over many years has had his fair share of challenges, matched with an equal number of creative, innovation and courageous solutions. Mark can help businesses make transformational change.
Mark believes the role of mentoring encompasses coaching, challenging, guiding and supporting people out of their comfort zone, to take brave new steps, that will raise their personal performance and increase job satisfaction.
In his youth Mark was a high board and spring board diver, to a national level. He says the discipline, sheer courage and determination this installed in him, set him up for a career in the hospitality business, with all the twists, turns, somersaults and hoops that he has turned to his advantage.
He is a seven time hotel general manager through his 25 year career with organisations such as Forte, Moat House and De Vere Hotel Groups.
Beginning with a 36 bedroom coaching inn at Marlborough, Mark highlights of his career include being involved in the design, build and opening of the Forte Hotel in Exeter and later repeating the experience in the opening of the Cheltenham/Gloucester Moat House. Also the running of the Cavenish Hotel, St James, London.
Mark also thrived on running large meeting and event hotels, such as the Chester Moat House with conference and banqueting for 500 and De Vere Daresbury Park with extensive meeting space including 21 meeting and event rooms.
Mark’s secret to success in his career lies in;
- attention to detail in every aspect of service delivery from enquiry handling to showround, closing the sale, delivery on the day and follow up afterwards
- identifying and exploiting business opportunities in both challenging times as well as good
- fully understanding how to grow return on investment through a series of well researched initiatives.
